Sacramento is the county seat and largest city in Sacramento County, as well as the state capital of California in the United States. With a population of 524,943 in 2020, Sacramento is the sixth-largest city in California and the ninth-largest capital in the United States. It's in Northern California's Sacramento Valley, near the junction of the Sacramento and American Rivers.

According to the 2010 United States Census, Sacramento has a population of 466,488 people. The population density was 4,660.0 people per square mile (1,799.2/km2).

There were 138,165 Hispanic or Latino people of any race (26.7%) in Sacramento; 22.6 percent of the population is of Mexican descent, accounting for over four-fifths of the city's Hispanic/Latino diaspora; 0.7 percent Puerto Rican, 0.5 percent Salvadoran, 0.2 percent Guatemalan, and 0.2 percent Nicaraguan. Non-Hispanic whites accounted for 34.5 percent of the population in 2010, down from 71.4 percent in 1970.

According to the Census, 458,174 people (98.2% of the population) lived in their own houses, 4,268 in non-institutionalized group quarters, and 4,046 in institutions.

There were 174,624 houses, with 57,870 (33.1%) having children under the age of 18, 65,556 (37.5%) opposite-sex married couples living together, 27,640 (15.8%) having a female householder without a husband, and 10,534 (6.0%) having a male householder without a wife. There were 13,234 unmarried opposite-sex partnerships (7.6%) and 2,498 married couples or partnerships of the same gender (1.4 percent ). Individuals made up 53,342 households (30.5%), with 14,926 (8.5%) having someone aged 65 or older living alone. A household had an average of 2.62 individuals in it. There were 103,730 families, with an average family size of 3.37. (59.4 percent of all households).

Sacramento has one of the largest LGBT populations per capita, with roughly 10% of the city's general population identifying as gay, lesbian, or bisexual, ranking seventh among major American cities and third in California behind San Francisco and slightly behind Oakland.

The age distribution in the city was as follows: 116,121 people (24.9 percent) were under the age of 18, 52,438 people (11.2 percent) were between the ages of 18 and 24, 139,093 people (29.8%) were between the ages of 25 and 44, 109,416 people (23.5 percent) were between the ages of 45 and 64, and 49,420 people (10.6 percent) were 65 and over. The participants' average age was 33.0 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.9 men. For every 100 females aged 18 and up, there were 92.2 men.

There were 190,911 housing units, with 86,271 (49.4%) owner-occupied units and 88,353 (50.6%) renter-occupied units, at an average density of 1,907.1 per square mile (736.3/km2). Homeowners had a vacancy rate of 2.8 percent, while renters had an 8.3 percent vacancy rate. There were 231,593 people living in owner-occupied housing units (49.6% of the population), while 226,581 people lived in rental housing units (48.6 percent ).
