Newcastle Adds The Gild to Chicago’s Gold Coast

Construction crews are digging in for the latest Newcastle apartment building coming to Chicago’s Gold Coast. The Gild will replace a vacant building that was so unremarkable that even the bank that was once in it died of boredom.

Gold Coast Spy Tina sent in this photograph showing work at the site, which is across the street from the long tent that the Division Street bars use for outdoor service. Because being inside a tent is the same thing as being outside.

When this one is done and dusted, it will bring 91 new homes to the neighborhood, plus 18,000 square feet of retail space, and a couple of dozen parking spaces in a 12-story building formerly known as 1212 North State, designed by CallisonRTKL. When we reported on this a couple of years ago, we described it thusly:

Modesty is the policy here, so visually we’re in for a taupe limestone and generic maroon brick-looking facade.  The balconies are recessed so as not to assert themselves into the city.  Since it’s on the corner, it could have had the address 1200 North State, but that’s too much like bragging.  1212 is close enough.  You won’t notice any cars from the building on the street because — by law — people who live there won’t be allowed to park in public, to reduce their impact on the neighborhood.  The law also requires the building to prohibit music from being played outside.  Even the dog run on the third floor amenity deck will have sound dampening to be less noticeable.

The Gild expected to be completed next year.
